Summer is a busy time at our Clubs. In addition to our regular core
programs, we offer special opportunities like Youth Enrichment Activities for
young people.
Youth Enrichment Activities (YEA) is offered to youth ages 6 to 18
(grades 1 to 12) during our 10-week summer program. This 2.5-hour per day
program is offered Monday through Friday (7:30 to 10:00 a.m.) for school-aged
children during the summer months, as a complement to B&GCSM’s regular summer
programs.

Youth Enrichment Activities (YEA)
For most students, summer represents a three-month vacation from learning. As a
result, too many young people lose valuable academic ground over the course of
their school vacation.
By participating in the YEA program, young people can maintain the knowledge and
skills they gain in the classroom through the summer months. The program
utilizes educational activities that are livelier and utilize a more
self-directed approach than what kids experience during the regular school day
so that their interest in the program is sustained. The YEA program promotes
self-directed learning by using programs and activities aimed at increasing
students’ long-term motivation for learning.
Some of the educational exercises that take place during the YEA program
include:
- Writing activities, such as keeping a journal, and writing letters to friends
and pen pals.
- Leisure reading, including newspapers, magazines, and age-appropriate books.
- Group discussions on such topics as current events, careers, health and fitness.
- Games that utilize mathematical skills, such as Math Jeopardy.
- Utilizing educational software to produce newsletters, creative stories,
role-playing skits and other creative projects.
- Other high-yield learning activities, such as playing games that involve
cognitive skills (i.e., Scrabble, Cranium)
Through participation in the YEA program, youth will experience:
- Improved attitude toward learning
- Improved grades in school
- Improved self-esteem
- Daily opportunities to practice academic skills, such as reading and writing
- Self-directed learning
- Improved behavior
