Health and Life Skills
SMART Moves
The SMART Moves (Skills Mastery And Resistance Training) prevention and
education program tackles the tough issues of drug and alcohol use and premature
sexual activity. The ultimate goal is to promote abstinence from substance abuse
and adolescent sexual involvement. A team approach of Club staff, peer leaders,
parents and community representatives provides members with support and mentors.
The program teaches young people ages 6 to 15 ways to respond to troublesome
situations through discussion and role-playing, and by practicing resistance and
refusal skills. Members learn to become assertive and strengthen decision-making
skills, in part by learning how the media and peers influence one’s
self-identity and behavior.
SMART Girls
An outgrowth of SMART Moves, this is a health, fitness, prevention/education and
self-esteem enhancement program for girls ages 8 to 17. The program’s focus on
healthy attitudes and lifestyles helps girls develop to their full potential.
Healthy Habits
The combined value of good nutrition, regular physical activity and overall
well-being is incorporated into all parts of the Club experience. This program
helps children ages 6 to 15 learn behaviors and attitudes that promote healthy
living and active learning. Healthy Habits is also the “Mind” component of
Triple Play: A Game for the Mind, Body and Soul.
